How to Choose the Right Food for Your Mini Pig

Every mini pig parent knows keeping their pet happy and healthy is a top priority. And the secret to success is simple: Supporting a mini pig’s long-term health and happiness starts with what you feed them.

For those dedicated pig parents determining what to feed and when, here’s the breakdown from Mazuri’s team of animal experts.

Why Feeding for Life-Stage Matters

When deciding what to feed a mini pig, considering the nutrient requirements for their specific life stage and style is key.

From early growth and development to adulthood and maintenance, your pet’s needs change significantly over time. That’s why Mazuri offers three mini pig diets, with each one tailored to support a distinct life stage:

Each of these diets is designed to provide complete mini pig nutrition, informed by decades of research and formulated by Ph.D. animal nutritionists for optimal digestive health, body condition and immune function. And feeding all three in succession as your mini pig ages helps ensure your pet receives the right balance of protein, fiber, energy and nutrients as their needs change.

Nutrition for Growing Mini Pigs

In the early stages of growth, mini pigs need plenty of protein and highly digestible milk-based ingredients to support proper development and immune function.

“Starting with an appropriate diet is one of the most impactful decisions an owner can make for long-term health,” explains Dr. Nichole, Ph.D. nutritionist at Mazuri

Since young mini pigs’ stomachs aren’t large enough to hold much food, Dr. Nichole recommends providing 1.5-3% of their body weight in food up into as many meals as you can manage each day. For mini pigs weaning off milk after 6-8 weeks, food can be soaked to increase palatability and fed free-choice to ease the transition.

The Mini Pig Youth Diet is ideal for providing energy and nutrition needed by mini pigs under 4 months of age. When your pet’s growth starts to slow around that four-month mark, it’s time to transition to an adult diet.

Nutrition for Active Adult Mini Pigs

At only four months old, it’s hard to consider your little companion an adult, but their nutritional needs are growing and changing quickly. What your mini pigs eat at 4-18 months old should support continued development without the excess calories in a Youth Diet.

Dr. Nichole suggests introducing a new adult diet by gradually mixing it with the food they’re used to over the course of a couple of weeks. The end goal is to fully transition over to feeding the Mazuri® Mini Pig Active Adult Food at about 1-2% of your pet’s body weight per day.

The priority at this stage* is to provide balanced fiber and nutrients that meet the needs of an active mini pig and support immune and skin health.

Continue feeding your mini pig the Active Adult diet until they are at least 1½ years old. This is another good time in your pet’s life to reassess their needs.

*For gestating or lactating female mini pigs, you can feed Mazuri® Mini Pig Active Adult and Mazuri® Mini Pig Youth together to support their needs.

Nutrition for Maturing Mini Pigs

Around 1½ years of age, your mini pig’s growth is really slowing down, and they may be settling into a slower lifestyle indoors. At this stage, mini pigs are ready to transition to a maintenance diet with more fiber and less protein to help keep them full while managing weight gain. Mazuri® Mini Pig Mature Maintenance Food is a great choice to meet the needs of an aging pet without sacrificing any essential nutrients.

Mazuri animal experts advise active, outdoor mini pigs in healthy body condition and those who are still rapidly growing stick with the Active Adult diet, while less active or overweight pigs should transition to the Mature Maintenance formula. Keep an eye on your mini pig’s growth and activity to make the best choice for your pet.

Once you make the switch, you can continue to feed 1-2% of your pet’s body weight in the Mature Maintenance Diet to any pig at this life stage or beyond, unless they are breeding or become highly active.
